A summarization of submitted teaching evaluations was conducted
by the Personnel Committee of the Department of Arts in Education
(April, 1993). The committee stated, “Dr. Bergland has
submitted student evaluations for over half of his courses.
Four of these were performed by the Meritorious Teaching Committee
in 1990. It is clear from their comments and consistently
high rankings that, since his first classes at the University
of Victoria, the students have unanimously considered Dr.
Bergland’s teaching to be of superior quality. His energetic
approach to instruction is commented upon as is his ability
to motivate and transfer his creative energy to students in
unique ways. The committee has noted the amount of time Dr.
Bergland devoted to his teaching, in planning lessons, preparing
materials, and working with students. Dr. Bergland appears
to be an excellent role model for future teachers, especially
since he models the creative/performing aspects of his career
and relates these to teaching.”
The Faculty
Advisory Committee on Appointments, Reappointments, Promotions.
& Tenure also provided a summary (Dec. 1993). This committee
stated, “Dr. Bergland submitted student evaluations
for over half his courses. By far the greatest proportion
of responses rate Dr. Bergland in the top 10% of university
professors. The following comments reflect the students’
thinking generally: ‘entertaining, inspiring, interesting,
knowledgeable, always well-prepared, very helpful, a superior
educational experience.’”
In his
recent work with graduate students in the USA, he received
positive feedback on his evaluations from the Director of
the program, Dr. Maureen Yoder (August 11/04). She wrote,
“I was just reading over your evaluations from your
Anderson, South Carolina Video class. Students had extremely
positive comments and rated the class' "Overall quality"
as 5.000, which is the highest possible rating! Comments included,
"thoroughly enjoyed class," "the teacher loves
his job and subject matter," "I loved his delivery
methods." Students stated that the strengths of the course
were "Instructor energy and excitement!" "Best
class of all!" "We got the best last." Don,
you have done an excellent job teaching a courses that can
be very demanding and technically challenging. I wanted you
to know that your efforts, and your commitment to our students
are greatly appreciated.” |
