2017 - GUANAJUATO ART RESIDENCY

Don will be living in Guanajuato City, Mexico from December 2016, to March 2017 and pursuing studio practise in this unique and visually strange city in Central Mexico.

His goal during his months of quiet residency here, will be to create 12 new paintings a month, exhibit in at least 3 international exhibitions a month, and continue his goal of attaining as much public exposure through magazine articles, interviews, and other promotional features as he can.

2016 - CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY - AWARD

In December, Don's interesting painting called, "Chloris," was selected by jurors for a "Gallery Choice Award" in the Photography/Digital Exhibition sponsored by Contemporary Art Gallery Online (CAGO) in Annapolis, Maryland.

2016 - FACEBOOK STUDIO PROJECT

Don began an investigative exploration using FaceBook as a way of informing interested viewers about his studio work and practise. He set the goal of posting a new work each day and providing information about its meaning and construction.

After many months of rigorous work, he now has over 2,000 followers and contributes to many international art groups.

2016 - MAGAZINE REVIEW - ART EXHIBEO MAGAZINE

A very perceptive review of Don Bergland's work was written by J.E. Raddatz and called, "Don Bergland: The Dreadful Hope of Eternal Oblivion." This review was published in Art Exhibeo magazine and contained many perceptive insights into his work that even amazed him.

2015 - ART FIRST NATIONS TEXTBOOK

In the early 1990s, Don co-wrote an art textbook series (with his colleague Dr. Bill Zuk) dealing with innovation in First Nations Art. The work was published by Art Image Publications and continues to find buyers after a quarter of a century on the market. Don continues to be amazed that he still receives royalties on this series of art publications.

2013 - INNOVATIVE UNIVERSITY COURSE OFFERING

Dr. Don Bergland is offering a dynamic and innovative course at the University of Victoria dealing with the structures and processes he uses to construct his own imagery. The course, EDCI 487 - Virtual Sculpture, focuses on the skills and knowledge necessary to construct documentary, surrealistic, imaginative, and evocative images using 3D modelling and assembly software. No previous art or software experience is needed. Running from September 5 to December 5, the course will be a hands-on learning experience administered in the Faculty of Educations media labs.

2013 - SPECIAL RECOGNITION EXHIBITION AWARDS

Don Bergland won three Special Recognition awards for his work at the 13th Annual Summer All Media Juried Online International Art Exhibition (Juried), This exhibition was sponsored by Upstream People Gallery, at the University of Nebraska,Omaha, Nebraska, USA. The juror, Professor Laurence Bradshaw says of his work, "Don Bergland, of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in his surrealistic approach and digital expertise presents three masterful works. "Road to Eternity", "Memorial" and "Lost Regret" are gems of the highest calibre in terms of imagination and mystery." The exhibition runs through August, 2013.

2013 - COLLECTIONS PUBLISHED ARTICLE

Don Bergland recently published an article dealing with his use of digital collections in his studio practise. Published in The Canadian Art Teacher, this article, called, Cabinets of Curiosities: Using Collections in Visual Studio Practice, focuses on three collections (real, photographic, and 3D) and shows how he uses these in active studio production.

2013 - GRADUATE WORK IN THE DIGITAL ART STATEMENT

During July, 2013, Don conducted a Master's Degree course at the University of Victoria dealing with the tools, techniques, and concepts involved in creating digital art statements using video, graphics, audio, and text. The graduate students each created a dynamic video statement about their studio lives and posted these on YouTube.

2013 - ARTWORK FEATURED IN LEVURE LITTERAIRE

Don was a featured artist in the Edition 7 of the International Cultural and Education Magazine, Levure Litteraire. His work was showcased and a focus given to his working style. He says, "My recent work focuses on constructed theatrical sets within which manipulated objects interact to create symbolic commentary on the oppressive nature of organized ideologies. To achieve the proper psychological effect, the image making process centers on the digital construction of 3D models and environments."

2013 - ART ON DIGITAL BILLBOARDS IN LOUISIANA

In March, 2013, some of Don Bergland's artwork appeared on large digital billboards in Hammond, Louisiana during the 2013 Hammond Digital Art Exhibition (Juried). This unique experience was sponsored by the Hammond Regional Arts Center (HRAC) & Lamar Advertising of Hammond. Hammond, Louisiana, USA. Group Exhibition displayed on Lamar Digital Billboards during March, 2013. This is the second year his work has been juried into this event.
