| This
project was written and produced by Don Bergland and published
by ETI Entertainment Technologies and the US Space and Rocket
Centre in Huntsville, Alabama. It was funded by Telefilm Canada,
The Telus BC New Media Fund, and Industry Canada. The project
is a professional development program for classroom teachers.
The program showcases an innovative approach for understanding
the value of digital learning products in the classroom. Designed
as a comprehensive learning experience for both teachers and
students, it provides a set of analytical tools (principles)
and demonstrates their use in examples drawn from Liftoff, a
space-based experiential product developed for grades 5-8. Liftoff
in Learning is divided into 3 parts: Teacher Workshop, Classroom
Experience, and Website Exploration. The Teacher Workshop introduces
teachers to the theory and practise underlying the assessment
of value in digital resources. The Classroom Experience focuses
on IT learning objectives. It allows students to explore a variety
of exciting activities based on the principles and learn to
identify their use. The Website Exploration introduces teachers
and students to the nature of an extended learning community
on the Internet. The program includes an assessment format which
allows teachers and students to articulate the value of their
learning experiences through reference to the principles and
activities. Although still in prototype format, the program
has been presented at workshop situations in Montreal, Alberta,
Alabama, and BC. The project is currently under partnering review
with NASA's Center of Education Technologies (CET) and the US
Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) to provide the program to
every school in America. The NASA Explorer Schools program has
also offered access to their 35 in field educators that provide
instruction to teachers in their program. |
