Don Bergland worked on
a number of educational projects for DNA Productions in Vancouver,
BC. In the Analysis Project, he acted as consultant to produce
a series of analytical assessments of key educational multimedia
products produced by DNA Productions in Vancouver. DNA was
a highly innovative multimedia production company who had
produced some of the most inventive educational CD-ROMS available
at the time. In order to make these CD-ROMs attractive to
school classroom environments, they had hired a number of
educational consultants to write teaching guides for each
of their products. In 1998, they were questioning the value
of the guides they had commissioned. They brought in Don Bergland
as a consultant to analyze the efficiency and value of the
guides for the specific classroom environments they were targeting.
The products selected for analysis included Starsites, The
Silk Road, Klondike Days, and , Don analyzed the guides and
produced a set of recommendations that DNA could follow in
the future when constructing guides of this nature.
Don Bergland
also worked as educational consultant and writer for the Paperfold
Project. Paperfold was an origami education site jointly produced
by the National Film Board (NFB) and DNA Productions Inc.
The site contained an Origami Magazine and an Education section
consisting of a grade 4-7 curriculum based on the Magazine
materials. The project was innovative for the time. Although
the origami content was traditional, the actual method of
website interactivity was technologically radical. Using a
combination of Flash ActionScripting, narrated movies, and
dimensional learning exposures, it offered a unique educational
experience for 1998. The origami content was based on the
inventive artistic work of Joseph Wu. Don Bergland was brought
in as the educational consultant with the task of monitoring
the website learning features, designing the educational interface,
and writing all the lesson modules for the project. The website
consisted of an “issue-based” approach and an
education area containing both Teacher and Student versions.
