| The
current phase of this faculty project was initiated and directed
by Don Bergland. The project is an attempt by the Faculty of
Education at the University of Victoria to develop a Learning
Commons concept for the faculty. The Faculty of Education Learning
Commons is a project designed to provide students, faculty,
and staff with enhanced methods of accessing and using information
related to professional practise. Since September 2003, the
LC project has gained momentum and progressive direction through
its use of an innovative development model developed and implemented
by Don. Using this particular model of development, the Learning
Commons has begun creating a variety of resources, programs,
and services that will be offered to all students, faculty,
and staff. The “initial” focus of the Learning Commons
is on the provision of essential computer and digital skills
needed by professionals in the 21st century. The Commons has
developed and now hosts two digital productivity studios, a
digital resource room, a newsletter (Synergy), and a website.
It will also start regular weekly workshop sessions related
to digital skills. A formal committee called the Learning Commons
Advisory Committee (LCAC) has been formed and has held several
important meetings. The committee has been instrumental in hosting
a faculty-wide needs assessment to obtain information relating
to further programs, services and resources. It will also begin
a regular program of activity. Further information will be presented
in early September through the Learning Commons Newsletter (Synergy)
and LC website. |
