LEARNING - ART FIRST NATIONS

ART FIRST NATIONS: TRADITION & INNOVATION

This major resource project was designed and written by Don Bergland and Bill Zuk and published by Art Image Publications in Quebec. Art First Nations: Innovation and Tradition was a major teaching and learning project developed over a period of 4 years. Ten years after its initial publication, it is still a popular and widely selling product throughout North America. The publishers write:

This unique series highlights Native People in five major geographical and cultural areas of North America: Southwest, Arctic, Eastern Woodlands, Plains, Northwest Coast. The program focuses on artistic innovation: concepts of tradition and innovation are examined through a comparative picture method, The masterworks studied provide a foundation for activities which involve history, criticism, appreciation and production.
The Art First Nations program generates respect for established traditions which have been passed on through generations of North America’s original inhabitants - traditions which have held steadfast over time and emphasize a respect for Native beliefs, customs, artistic practices and world views.
- Art Image Publishers

The resource series features both traditional and contemporary Native North American Art. It focuses on the artistic innovation of First Nations peoples in five geographical and cultural areas of North America: Southwest, Arctic, Eastern Woodlands, Plains, and Northwest Coast. Concepts of tradition and innovation are examined through a comparative picture approach and the lessons incorporate history, art, criticism, art appreciation, and production. The resource encourages students to create their own meaningful artwork in various media. Numerous extension activities integrate creative writing, visual and performing arts, social studies, and other core subjects. The assessment of student learning is addressed in each unit. Two student workbooks develop unique problem-solving opportunities, promotes individual learning and allows students to interact directly with the masterworks. Each Art First Nations kit includes: twenty laminated art prints and a comprehensive Teacher’s Guide. There are 3 kits: Elementary, Intermediate, and a French translation of the Elementary kit. All are for sale through Art Image Publishers in Montreal.

Picture Cards
The AFN picture cards are an essential part of the program. Each learning module uses two paired cards, one representing a traditional artwork, the other showing an innovation.
