| Late
in 1995, Don was invited to do a public performance by audio
legend, Jim Andrews in his new theatre, Mocambo Po in Victoria,
BC. In response to this invitation, Don put together a “live”
radio broadcast simulation which he called Volt Radio Network.
VRN was a stand-up performance which required the primary narrator
to synchronize a spoken narrative with recorded pieces of audio
(music & sound effects). Lasting 30 minutes. the performance
was an awe-inspiring blast through a fast-paced series of radio
advertisements, talk-show fragments, public promotions, and
off-beat commentary. As some viewers later commented, “it
was like observing a crazy disk jockey gone mad with some alien
passion.” The basic styling of the piece shared some of
the performance stylings Don had been developing since Bureau
of Imagination and Borax Jamboree. The performance was viewed
by several observers who later worked with Don on future projects
involving the same “radio-based” formats. |
