| This
project began as a method of creative presentation in the 1980s
and found its way into the programs Don administered at the
university and his workshop program. The dissolve box is an
easily-built apparatus which allows the presenting artist to
show slides which dissolve into each other in a smooth and flexible
way. Using two slide projectors, the box employs a simple sliding
shutter that is controlled manually by the operator. By sliding
the shutter and changing slides, a creative transition can be
attained that is impossible using other types of electronic
dissolve units. Don began using this box for creative presentations
of his own work. He then started introducing it into his studio
classes. When the presentation is accompanied by music, a very
dramatic and dynamic presentation can be offered. Don offered
blueprints and instructions for building this box. When classroom
teachers discovered they could build the box for less than $10,
they became interested in using it as a classroom resource.
