Reef is an innovative multimedia project displaying interactive
structures for poetic and voice-based media activity. The project
was an attempt to develop a new and different way to present
a simple poem. Don took a poem he had written several years
earlier and used the Macromedia Director environment to design
ways a user could interactively access and present the poem
in ways different from sequential text readings. Using the dynamics
of Lingo programming that Director allowed, Don created Reef.
The poem was divided into 10 discrete elements which were labeled
on the screen. Each of these elements had two attributes attached
to it: a spoken phrase and an underlying soundtrack. By “rolling”
the mouse over the labeled section, the soundtrack played. By
“clicking” the mouse, the voicetrack played over
the soundtrack. The poem could be presented in its original
manner by simply rolling and clicking on each section in sequence.
The poem could also be entirely reconstructed by clicking section
out of sequence, rolling over new sections as voicetracks continued
to play, or clicking on new sections before old voicetracks
could finish. The poem had infinite possibilities for replay
by inventive users. |
