Don’s performance work has always utilized audio. Late
in 1994, he immersed himself in his digital audio studio with
colleague, Colin Yardley, in order to solve a series of issues
related to the production of content they had been developing.
Together they designed an innovative approach to audio production
and began testing the concept in various radio formats. Their
first successful production was a short regular satirical comedy
feature called, Culture Canada. This production utilized a regular
radio broadcast news format and focused on news about events
occurring in Canada. The events were dryly satirical commentaries
on political and cultural happenings in the country. Don and
Colin acted as announcers and used a dual-narration technique
in delivering the material. This feature had perfected some
of the comic stylings they had been exploring and they created
a simple audio-based method for presenting the results within
a radio context. They produced a pilot feature and were successful
in marketing it to the CBC for weekly performance on the Winnipeg
show called, Definitely Not the Opera. The feature generated
interesting reviews and was considered a prototype for further
audio explorations Don and Colin would develop in future radio-based
projects. |
